Unspeakable joy.

Yesterday, while washing dishes (manually, we don't have a dishwasher), I was suddenly overcome with unspeakable joy. It's that kind of joy that seems to give light within the heart. Oh, so cliche, you say. Well, that's why it's unspeakable, it's very hard to put into words.

I'll just put it this way, even if you don't hate doing a chore as mundane as washing dishes, it still is a chore - repetitive, conducive for spaceout moments. Then you abruptly feel lighter, as if washing dishes is one of the most wonderful things to do in life! But that's not all, I also saw all the great things that happened in my life flash before me.

Now that I'm writing about that unspeakable-joy-moment, I ask myself, am I about to die? Is it a premonition of sorts?

I'm always going through a lot, I try not to dwell on it, even if I feel my soul wavering, because that's how life is: There are joys, there are sorrows. It's just that sometimes, one sorrowful thing can throw a weight that can seep the life out of you. What fools we mortals be, indeed.

My unspeakable joy moment just kicked sorrow's balls, and let me be for the entire day. So to honor that day, I'm posting this old photo that can be totally unrelated to the reader, but very meaningful for me.

My life with you is like living in a fantasy land, there are kind and caring creatures, as well as orcs and trolls.

What's the lesson for today? Kick sorrow's balls!

That's it for now.

Lantern Parade 2012

I met up with some college friends that I haven't seen in years last Friday, December 14th, to watch the annual Christmas Lantern Parade in UP Diliman.

It was catch-up time, so we really didn't take lots of pictures of the lanterns/floats being paraded. It's just a nice feeling to chat with friends in person, we've all been busy with our own lives. We reminisced, laughed, talked and had a great time.

Here's a few snaps I took using just an ipod touch.

Flying fish!

I'm not sure what this is, just looks pretty.

A Nightmare before Christmas Rudolph

Alien abduction of a creature

Fantasy flying ship

Would you like to be kissed by this guy?
It just occurred to me that technology in photography has come a long way indeed. Almost everyone is lugging around photographic equipment, even kids have the expensive ones. Parades are great for photo moments, it's just that I got a bit dizzy seeing camera flashes from all directions.

I love going to the annual parade. I try each year to find time to watch it. As a spectator for several years, I realized that I really am getting old, but it's a warm, fuzzy feeling. Yes, I do see the world changing right before my eyes in my mundane existence, but gatherings like this one amplify those changes. Making me sit back not only to marvel at the beauty of change, but to also mourn losses.

It's almost Christmas. Have a happy holiday!

Reminiscing

We had lots of fun times in our own house that we, unfortunately, had to leave. My loved one told me, if the house had a heart, it felt that the house loved us.

Please don't call my glasses hipster glasses, I never knew that my geeky glasses would suddenly be a fashion item for some. I've been wearing glasses since I was a kid.

Muni-muni 3

(Binura ko yung ibang namakinilya ko, too much information, bordering on whining/ranting) Anyways...

May ibang karanasan, may ibang boses.

At dahil dun, marami akong natutunan.

Ito muna ang photo of the day ko.
Hindi ako relihiyosa. Pero nagpupunta ng simbahan. Magulong ipaliwanag. Klik.

some fb stuff

On basketball.

I have one word for my recent posts. Overkill. I think I kept going on about taking photos. This happens to me when I am trying to learn something. It's about time to write something different. Besides, I can't think clearly because my housemate's got a visitor who's watching college basketball on TV, he's so noisy. Cheering. The sound is grating. Infuriatingly.

Perhaps I should write about basketball. I don't like it. I only bear watching basketball with my father, (but he's dead for two years now,) just so because he makes funny comments on how bwakaw one player is, or the other one is a balyador, stuff like that, while I watch and look out for mascots on the sidelines and comment on his/her mascot moves. My father would laugh at my punchlines about the mascots.

I don't like the concept of the game of basketball, and now I have no reason to ever watch another game, I would only miss my dad. He's the only reason why I watch basketball on lazy weekend afternoons.

My dad loves sports. He knows how to play tennis, badminton, volleyball, basketball; swimming, diving, he was a former soldier of the Philippine Marines. Of course his favorite is shooting real bullets in a firing range, not that war games thing that uses pellets. He has a glock, a smith & wesson revolver and a double-barrel shotgun, which he loves cleaning during the weekends. I haven't learned any of the things that he's good at. I can only do a back float and a backstroke. Since he's my father, I see him as a Super Dad, who knows lots of stuff, because on top of that, he can draw realistic carabaos. At least he drew, even if it's just carabaos.

Back to basketball. I know my dad loves the sport. He appreciates those who play well and is a teamplayer. He wants an interesting game where both teams are neck and neck against each other. Now this noisy visitor, he keeps on screaming GO ATENEO!!!! at the top of his lungs. First of all, he is not an atenista, he's an out of school youth who goes to the university of DOTA, not that there's anything wrong with being an out of school youth, just as long as you try to make yourself useful to society. Alak, DOTA, yosi, clubbing clubbing, (talagang nagtagalog na, di kinaya). And what really irked me and made me sad at the same time is that, he is only cheering "go ateneo" to make himself look cool and privileged, whatever shallow reason he has. Pa-cool. Where's the love for the game?

I don't like basketball, but I don't impose it on other people. I even enjoy looking at people who are so excited about the game. Really excited to see people cheer for a good play of the game that they love, not for yabang reasons. And so I am both mad and sad. I'm mad about the noise coming from an annoying, obnoxious person, and I'm sad because I miss my father and hate to be reminded about it, because it's painful to make me aware of my sadness and loss.

Favorites Series [Prologue]

Almost all my posts are gloomy and self-deprecating. I never thought that it would turn out this way. Therefore I must stop this dark state of mind and focus more on the things that make me happy. Hey, I didn't read any self-help book nor did I watch any self-empowerment talk shows. Too much of misery ain't a good nothing.

And yes, I really like the current layout/design of my blog. My good friend aka goodlookingguy made this for me, and I really like it. The sight of a Monet painting always makes me feel glad.

This is a prologue of a series of "favorites". I would begin writing stuff that I love and crazy about. There's a lot, so I think I won't have trouble thinking about themes for it. I'm in the office and not in the right state of mind to write anything yet but alot of ideas are brewing inside my head.

Of satanic cults, LSD laced magic tattoos and backmasked tapes…

You really can’t tell the story of your entire life in one page. Every person’s life details may not even fit a 500 page book. I can’t even remember each detail or if I could I don’t have the ability to write it all down. What I’ve realized about writing blogs is that each post is whatever fills my head at the moment. It is the urge to see what my thoughts are, instead of just unseen neurons zapping across my brain. Having said that, I should start saying stuff related to the title.

I grew up surrounded by aunts who just got converted as born again Christians then. But the rest of my family are devout Catholics. Those aunts of mine were iconoclasts, as in literally not because they broke stereotypes but they broke icons, literally hahaha. They smashed decades old religious icons from my grandma’s house. They threw out the statue of Virgin Mary out the window, followed by the cutie Sto. Nino, pulled the rosaries until the beads fell on the ground then ranted Bible verses condemning idolatry. Poor grandma, she was the one who witnessed all of that. It was just told to me in vivid detail when I was four because I was totally creeped out when they forced me to kneel and pray the rosary with them for my dead grandpa’s wake. They meant it as an explanation on why the statues were cracked. We were kneeling in front of those icons that were obviously put back together by rugby. Those icons were creepy enough before, old and faded, blank eyes staring at you. The cracked faces with dried out ooze of rugby increased the creepy factor.

There was a lot of drama when my relatives talk about their conflicting religious beliefs, I was too young enough to care. However, what caught my interest was their common belief that there are satanists about. It was the early 80s and brit punk rock and heavy metal abound, along with big haired, shoulder padded teeny boppers and glam rockers. The tabloids didn’t help either, with headlines like:

NATAGPUANG PUTOL NA PAA NG BATA, HINIHINALANG BIKTIMA NG SATANISTA

Kids like me were asked by parents to wear the rosary around our necks when we go to school. Looking back, I think it was just a lame attempt to cover up the real issue. Probably the kids who got kidnapped were shipped out in some remote province or another southeast Asian country to work either as sex slaves, sweat shop workers or soldiers for an extremist group. And those dismembered appendages were meant as an example to those who wanted to run away from the gang. Were the grown ups then too naïve? Was the press so scared to write anything about the government or our economy that they thought it was ok to entwine the supernatural with reality without trying to dig deeper on what’s behind all of it?

Since the grownups at home were so stressed out about the satanist crap, at school I tried to know more about it. I read the Time Life books and those other hard bound book series like condensed encyclopedias that dealt with supernatural stuff. It scared and amused me at the same time. Same effect when I watch the Twilight Zone. [Hey don’t get the idea that I’m some sort of a witch/Wiccan/goth girl, I’m not.] I even read the Bible’s Old Testament and Revelation at home coz it was so gory, scary and just plain interesting for me, but my aunts thought that I was just being some sweet Jesus-loving girl.

People fear a lot of different stuff throughout their lives across decades and generations. Most have trouble adjusting to what’s new or what others are into if it falls outside the tiny box they comfortably snuggled into. But as kids that’s the point when our box is so big we want to fill it in as much as we could. At home my aunts were saying that there were some satanistic bands or rock stars, making the devil’s work easier, spreading the message of satan subconsciously and that we must be vigilant with whatever we do. You can hear those messages if you play cassette tapes backwards, they call it backmasking. Most of those backmasked messages were so garbled, you can hear anything that you want to hear. I really didn’t get the point with the trouble of backmasking those tapes anyway. Why can’t they just say it outright, it takes too much EFFORT to decipher it. And they say the road to hell is wide and easy…

Again I got interested with something they were warning me against. Punk rockers, their eyes, mohawks and weird hair and boots. I didn’t know the word “ cool” at that time to describe it, but I knew the feeling when you see something “cool.” Same with those metal bands, they sure are noisy, I could not understand the lyrics but I knew they were trying to say something. Their tattoos were so cool.

Enterprising candy and snack makers targeted kids with their cool freebie. Instead of toys from chickadees, some gave out magic tattoos. It’s like stickers for your body and it doesn’t peel unless you wash it off good. It was all the rave for kids, some feel that they were rockers, wrestlers, rebels or gang members. I thought it was cute and wow what an invention, kids won’t have to go through the pain of getting a tattoo. Boring adults thought we were having too much fun, maybe they thought we might actually get tattoos when we get old enough. So they generated this rumor that magic tattoos have LSD, a drug that will make you do crazy things. Will turn you into an addict and become a criminal. It didn’t scare me.

But I was obedient and just kept my thoughts safe in my head and never disappointed them, always looked the part of their nice little girl.
